About Us

Abel Lumber is a family-owned / independent door, trim, and window supplier serving builders, remodelers, and architects across Texas. Alongside our stock door and trim business, we build custom doors from raw lumber — entry units, interior stile-and-rail, arch tops, barn doors, and one-off pieces you can't order out of a catalog.

This is the shop where the hard jobs land. When a builder needs a 3680 mahogany entry with a custom panel layout, or a homeowner wants six interior doors matched to 1920s originals, it comes to our bench. We're looking for someone who takes that seriously and enjoys the challenge.

Small crew, good equipment, real craftsmanship, and work you can point at when you drive past the house.

What You'll Do

You'll build custom doors slabs to finish-ready units, working from shop drawings and customer specs.

  • Mill rough stock to size — rip, joint, plane, and glue up stiles, rails, and panels
  • Build stile-and-rail doors using [mortise-and-tenon / dowel / cope-and-stick] joinery
  • Run shaper, moulder, and router setups; grind or set up knives to match custom profiles
  • Raise panels, cut arch tops and radius work, and lay out glass openings for divided lites
  • Glue up, clamp, and square units; sand to finish-ready condition
  • Machine for hinges, locksets, and multipoint hardware; hang and fit units in custom jambs
  • Match existing profiles and historical millwork for restoration and remodel work
  • Check moisture content and grain selection; cull defects before they reach the bench
  • Inspect finished work for square, flat, joint quality, and spec accuracy
  • Maintain tooling, keep knives sharp, and run a clean, safe shop

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • Hands-on woodworking experience — custom doors, cabinetry, furniture, architectural millwork, or finish carpentry
  • Ability to read and build from shop drawings, cut lists, and dimensioned specs
  • Accurate to 1/32" on layout and joinery
  • Confident on core shop equipment: table saw, jointer, planer, shaper, router, sanders, clamp systems
  • Understanding of wood movement, grain direction, and species behavior
  • Patience and precision — on a custom door, there is no second slab in the rack

Preferred:

  • Experience with stile-and-rail construction and panel-raising
  • Shaper and moulder setup, including custom knife work
  • Experience with hardwood species ([mahogany, white oak, alder, knotty pine, walnut])
  • Familiarity with CNC or CAD / door design software
  • Veneer, glass installation, or finishing experience
  • Forklift certification (or willingness to become certified)

Not there yet? If you have strong general woodworking skills and want to move into custom door work, tell us. We'll consider training the right person alongside our experienced builders.

Compensation

$19 – $22 per hour, depending on skill level and experience. This is a craft position and we pay for craft — if you can build clean, accurate work without hand-holding, we'll compensate accordingly and review as you take on more complex jobs.
